The noise stopped three weeks ago. There are still droppings in the cupboard. Is the problem over, or is it just quieter? There are five tests that will tell you, and four of them cost nothing.
The five tests
- 01Clear and recheck. Remove every dropping from one area, come back in 72 hours. New droppings mean active.
- 02The flour test. A thin dusting across a suspected runway records footprints and tail drag overnight.
- 03Read the gnaw marks. Fresh gnawing exposes pale timber. Old gnawing has darkened and collected dust.
- 04Check the rub marks. Active runways are dark and slightly tacky. Historic ones are dry and flaking.
- 05Non-toxic monitoring blocks. Feeding marks confirm activity without poisoning anything.
Why “the noise stopped” proves nothing
Silence is the least reliable indicator there is, because it has at least four different explanations and only one of them is good news.
The population may genuinely be gone. Or it may have relocated to a quieter part of the building — often from a resonant plasterboard ceiling into a wall cavity where the sound simply does not carry. Or the animals may have reduced activity temporarily after a disturbance. Or, if you have baited, some may have died in the cavity, which produces silence followed a few days later by an odour.
Physical evidence does not have this ambiguity. Droppings, tracks and gnaw marks either accumulate or they do not.

The flour test, properly done
This is the most decisive of the free tests and the one most often done badly.
Pick the right surface
Rodents travel with one flank against a wall. Choose a spot along a skirting board, beside a pipe run, or at the entrance to a cupboard — not the middle of a floor.
Dust it thinly
Plain flour or talc, sieved to a very light film about the size of an A4 sheet. A thick pile is conspicuous enough to be avoided; a fine dusting is not.
Leave it two nights
Rats in particular are wary of change and may take a night to resume using a disturbed runway. One night is not a negative result.
Read it in raking light
Hold a torch low and almost parallel to the surface. Footprints and the drag line left by a tail show up in shadow that overhead light washes out completely.
What the dust tells you
A tail drag between paired prints is diagnostic — nothing else in a house leaves that pattern.

A note on ultraviolet torches
UV lights are widely sold for rodent detection on the basis that rodent urine fluoresces. It does — but this test is much less reliable than the marketing suggests, and it is worth knowing why before you buy one.
Plenty of other things fluoresce under UV: optical brighteners in laundry residue and cleaning products, some adhesives, certain food residues and various building materials. A glowing patch is not proof of rodent urine.
Fluorescence also persists long after the animals have gone, so a positive result says nothing about whether the infestation is current. UV is genuinely useful to a technician mapping historic runways and contamination for cleaning. It is close to useless for answering the question this article is about.
How long to monitor before calling it clear
Two weeks of no fresh evidence is a reasonable threshold for a domestic property, provided you are actually checking rather than assuming.
Days 1–3
Clear all droppings from two or three known areas and dust one or two runways. Record what you cleared and where.
Day 3 check
Any new droppings, prints or feeding marks means active. Stop here — you have your answer and it is not the one you wanted.
Days 4–14
Recheck every few days. Keep the dust in place and top it up if it is disturbed by air movement rather than animals.
Day 14
Nothing new across multiple points, no new gnawing, no ammonia odour — reasonable grounds to call it clear and move on to proofing.
Confirming the building is clear is exactly the point at which proofing should happen. Sealing entry points while animals are still inside traps them in the cavity, which produces a dead animal problem in an inaccessible space. Verify first, seal second — in that order, every time.
When the tests say active and DIY has already failed
If you have baited or trapped and the evidence still says active after a fortnight, something structural is usually going on: bait placed off the actual runways, stations moved repeatedly so wary rats never accept them, a population being continuously topped up from outside, or a second species in a different part of the building.
That is the point where an inspection earns its cost, because the diagnosis rather than the product is what is failing. How fresh is a “fresh” dropping?
Within roughly 24 to 48 hours it is dark, slightly moist and shiny, and will deform rather than shatter under gentle pressure. After about a week it is grey, dry and crumbles to powder. Use a tool, not fingers, and wear gloves.
Is it safe to sweep up old droppings?
Not dry. Dry brushing or vacuuming aerosolises dried urine and faecal particles. Dampen the area with a disinfectant solution first, wear a P2 mask and disposable gloves, and bag the material rather than putting it through a household vacuum.
Could they have moved rather than died?
Very commonly. Rodents relocate within a building in response to disturbance, temperature and food availability. Moving from a ceiling into a wall cavity often makes them almost inaudible, which is frequently mistaken for the problem resolving itself.
What if the noise stopped and then a smell started?
That sequence usually means an animal died in the cavity, typically after baiting. Odour generally appears two to four days after death in warm weather. The carcass needs locating and removing, and blowfly activity around a ceiling opening will usually indicate the position.
Do I need to check the roof as well as inside?
Ideally, yes, if it can be accessed safely — roof cavities are where most activity concentrates. Step only on joists, wear a P2 mask, and do not enter at all if the space is cramped, unlit or contains material you suspect may be hazardous.
Is one clean flour test enough?
No. Run it at two or three separate points over at least two nights each. A single negative may just mean you chose a spot that is not on the runway, and rats may avoid a disturbed area for a night regardless.
